Audiologists are trained to understand hearing loss and associated comorbidities. A hearing instrument specialist is a state-licensed professional trained to evaluate common types of hearing loss in adult patients, and to fit hearing aids when applicable. They are not licensed to diagnose hearing loss or hearing and balance disorders such as tinnitus, hyperacusis, hidden hearing loss, or auditory processing disorders. They specialize in hearing aids and associated tasks such as hearing aid fittings, programming, and earmold impressions.
