Hearing Tests for Children

Children’s ears aren’t just smaller versions of adult ears. Testing children’s hearing requires a different, more engaging approach. Explore the variety of methods used to ensure accurate and fun hearing assessments for kids.

Ages	Description
Newborns and infants	Special equipment tests newborns and infants without requiring an active response. Electrodes on the forehead and behind the ears record the hearing nerve's response while the child listens to sounds, ideally done while sleeping.

Ages	Description
7 months and older	Tests children 7 months and older using flashing lights and sounds or videos to capture attention and reinforce hearing behaviors. Sounds are played through speakers, headphones, or inserts. Most children find this method enjoyable.

Ages	Description
3 years and older	For older children who can follow simple instructions. They hold an object to their ear and play a game once they hear a sound. This method can be practiced at home with toys, making the test process engaging and fun.

Ages	Description
All ages	Tests the health of cochlear outer hair cells without requiring an active response. Soft sounds played into the ear canal generate emissions measured to determine hearing range, suitable for children and others.
